A United States lawmaker, Kimberly Daniels, has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to immediately review and possibly sack Nigeria’s Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, over worsening insecurity across the country.
The call followed a security assessment highlighting rising killings and abductions, particularly in northern regions, with concerns that current leadership within the defence structure may be undermining effective counterterrorism efforts.
Daniels reportedly recommended Matawalle’s removal or redeployment, alongside a full investigation into allegations of complicity and weak strategic coordination in addressing banditry and insurgency.
The lawmaker argued that continued violence, including attacks on vulnerable communities, reflects deeper systemic failures that require urgent political action rather than routine responses.
She also urged international partners to increase pressure on Nigeria to ensure accountability and protect affected populations.
This development adds to growing criticism of Nigeria’s security management, where both domestic and international voices are questioning leadership effectiveness.
Ultimately, the demand to sack a sitting minister underscores a broader issue, whether Nigeria’s security crisis is rooted in operational gaps or leadership credibility at the highest levels.
