LAGOS, Nigeria | October 14, 2026. The United States Consulate General in Lagos has posthumously honoured veteran Nigerian actor Olu Jacobs with a Creative Industry Legend Award in recognition of his outstanding contribution to theatre, television and film.

The recognition took place at a creative industry reception titled “Reel Connections from Hollywood to Nollywood,” which brought together actors, filmmakers, producers and other industry stakeholders to celebrate Nigerian creatives who have strengthened professional and commercial ties between Nigeria and the United States.

Jacobs’ sons, Olugbenga and Olusoji Jacobs, received the award on behalf of their family.

Speaking at the event, US Consul General Brandon Hudspeth described Jacobs as one of Nigeria’s most celebrated actors, noting that his career helped shape the country’s film industry and strengthen connections between Nigerian cinema and international entertainment.

Popularly known as the “Lion of Lufodo,” Jacobs built a career spanning more than five decades. He trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London and appeared in British television productions and international films before becoming one of Nollywood’s most recognisable faces.

The late actor was honoured alongside seven other Nigerian creative industry figures: Richard Mofe-Damijo, filmmaker Kunle Afolayan, producer and director Bolanle Austen-Peters, Africa International Film Festival founder Chioma Ude, Inkblot Productions co-founder Zulumoke “Zulu” Oyibo, producer Josh Olaoluwa and visual development artist Uzoma Dunkwu.

The event also highlighted the role of international exchange programmes, streaming platforms and film partnerships in expanding opportunities for Nigerian filmmakers and performers.

Jacobs’ posthumous recognition serves as a tribute to a distinguished career that connected Nigerian storytelling with audiences beyond the country’s borders.
