The United States and Ecuador conducted joint military operations on March 3, 2026, targeting “designated terrorist organizations” inside Ecuador, as announced by the United States Southern Command.
The operation, carried out with Ecuadorian armed forces on Ecuadorian soil, reflects an expanded U.S. military role in Western Hemisphere security beyond traditional air and naval interdictions. It marks one of the first known land engagements by U.S. forces alongside a Latin American partner against groups the Pentagon and Quito label as narco-terrorists.
Ecuador’s Defence Ministry described the effort as part of a “new phase” in its fight against narco-terrorism and illegal mining, though operational specifics remain classified. The United States has provided military assistance and intelligence support under longstanding regional security cooperation frameworks.
The why behind this escalation is strategic: both governments argue that powerful drug trafficking networks have become organized, violent and terror-linked threats that undermine national stability, fuel corruption, and endanger citizens across the hemisphere. The joint action underscores Washington’s broader push to counter transnational criminal groups designated as terrorist organizations while strengthening Ecuadorian security capacity.
