American professional boxer Hannah Rapp has died at the age of 26 after being struck by a vehicle while riding her bicycle in Texas, authorities have confirmed.
According to the Brazos County Sheriff’s Office, the tragic incident occurred on Saturday when a vehicle overtook Rapp before suddenly stopping and reversing into her. She sustained fatal injuries in the collision.
The driver has since been arrested and charged with manslaughter as investigations into the incident continue.
Rapp had recently challenged for the WBC women’s featherweight title, suffering the only defeat of her professional career against Tiara Brown in Orlando in June. The loss left her with a professional record of eight wins, one defeat and one draw.
Tributes have poured in from across the boxing world following news of her death.
World Boxing Council (WBC) President Mauricio Sulaiman described Rapp as an exceptional athlete whose impact extended beyond the ring.
“She was an exceptional boxer, but above all, an invaluable member of our boxing family,” Sulaiman said.
WBC featherweight champion Tiara Brown, who shared the ring with Rapp in what proved to be her final bout, remembered her as a fierce competitor with remarkable humility.
“The best dance partner I have ever faced as a pro,” Brown said, recalling that Rapp had asked for her autograph before their title fight.
“It filled my heart because we were getting ready for war, yet she was still asking for my autograph. We fought a great fight. It was my honour to share the ring with her.”
Rapp, a native of Indiana, initially excelled in athletics before switching to boxing. She turned professional in 2024 while also working full-time as a fire and life safety inspector.
Her promoter, Most Valuable Promotions, paid tribute to the late boxer, describing her as a gifted athlete who earned widespread respect throughout the sport.
“Hannah made a lasting impression on everyone who had the opportunity to meet her. She was a gifted athlete, a valued member of the boxing community, and someone who was deeply respected by those around her. We are grateful to have shared a part of her journey and will honour her memory in the weeks ahead,” the promotion said in a statement.
Rapp’s sudden death has sent shockwaves through the international boxing community, with athletes, officials and fans mourning the loss of one of the sport’s promising young talents.
