The University of Calabar has dismissed eight members of staff over various acts of alleged misconduct, including examination malpractice, result falsification, fraud, vandalism, absenteeism and abandonment of duty.
The disciplinary action was approved during the institution’s 174th Governing Council meeting and announced in a statement issued on Saturday by the Registrar and Secretary to the Council, Dr. Icha Chukwuka.
According to the statement, the affected employees, comprising both academic and non-academic staff, were found culpable after the Governing Council considered reports from disciplinary panels.
Among those dismissed was Prof. Emilia Oyira of the Department of Nursing Science, who was sanctioned over alleged examination malpractice.
Four other staff members — Mr. Ukachukwu Echezunachi Darlington of the Department of Chemical Pathology, Mrs. Akinrinade Opayemi Ogunluyi of the Department of Microbiology, Dr. Arum Priscilia Nchekwube of the Department of Internal Medicine, and Mrs. Okoi Nyesam Eni of the Clinical Medical Hostel, were dismissed over allegations of absenteeism and abandonment of duty.
The university also dismissed Mr. Joseph Edet Okon of the Works Department for allegedly vandalising and stealing armoured cables, while Mr. Eworo Valentine Ibor of the Department of Pure and Applied Chemistry lost his appointment over the alleged falsification and alteration of examination results.
Also affected was Mr. Emmanuel Adariku of the Alumni Relations Office, who was dismissed over the alleged unauthorised withdrawal of funds from the Friends of Malabor Alumni Trust Fund account.
In addition to the dismissals, the Governing Council approved a two-year suspension of the promotion of Dr. Mathias Agba of the Department of Nursing Science and ordered the forfeiture of 50 per cent of his withheld salary over negligence of duty and alleged examination malpractice.
The University of Calabar reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining high ethical and professional standards, stating that the administration of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Offiong Offiong, would continue to uphold integrity, accountability and a zero-tolerance policy for misconduct across the institution.
