The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has issued a stern warning to officers, declaring that wearing the police uniform does not grant immunity to abuse power or take lives unlawfully.
Speaking during the passing-out parade of 1,068 retrained constables in Uyo Thursday, Uyo, the police chief said the era of impunity within the Nigeria Police Force is over.
Disu stressed that any officer found misusing firearms or engaging in unlawful killings would face immediate dismissal and prosecution.
“No badge is a licence to kill. No uniform is a shield from justice,” he said, underscoring the need for accountability across all ranks.
He further reminded personnel of the importance of Force Order 237, which governs the use of firearms, noting that weapons must only be deployed as a last resort and strictly in accordance with the law.
Beyond the use of force, the IGP cautioned against misconduct such as extortion, drunkenness while on duty, and other unprofessional behavior, warning that violators would face strict disciplinary action.
Addressing the newly retrained officers, Disu urged them to uphold discipline, professionalism, and respect for citizens, emphasizing that the duty of a police officer is to protect lives, not endanger them.
He also commended ongoing reforms within the force, including improved training programs, initiatives to strengthen the capacity of female officers, and the establishment of specialized units to combat violent crimes.
