Residents of a community in Rivers State on Wednesday reportedly rescued a six-month-old baby and apprehended two women accused of attempting to abduct the child.
According to accounts from residents and the child’s mother, the incident occurred after she briefly left her home to purchase food, leaving the infant in the care of her two sons.
The mother said her eldest son later informed her that two unfamiliar women had entered their room. Initially dismissing the report, she continued with her errand before deciding to return home.
Upon getting back, she discovered that her six-month-old baby was missing. Alarmed by the development, she immediately raised the alarm and began searching for the child.
A resident reportedly told her that two women had been seen carrying a baby and heading towards a motorcycle, prompting community members to quickly mobilise in search of the suspects.
Witnesses said the residents intercepted the two women before they could leave the area. The baby was reportedly rescued unharmed, while the suspects were apprehended and handed over for further investigation.
The incident triggered tension within the community as concerned residents gathered at the scene, demanding answers over the circumstances surrounding the alleged abduction attempt.
As of the time of filing this report, security authorities had yet to issue an official statement on the incident. However, residents have called for a thorough investigation to determine the motive behind the alleged act and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.
The development has also renewed concerns about child safety and security within residential communities, with many residents urging parents and guardians to remain vigilant and closely monitor their children.
