MAIDUGURI, Borno State – The Nigerian Army has announced the surrender of two senior commanders of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) to troops of Operation Hadin Kai in Borno State, describing the development as a significant breakthrough in the ongoing counter-terrorism campaign in the North-East. The commanders, identified as Ismail Mohammed and Abu Umar, reportedly surrendered on June 10 in the Mangari axis of the Lake Chad region after sustained military operations and pressure on insurgent networks.
According to military authorities, preliminary investigations revealed that both men occupied strategic positions within the terrorist organization, with one reportedly serving as a bomb-making specialist. They are currently in military custody undergoing profiling, interrogation, and debriefing.
The Army said the surrender reflects the growing impact of ongoing operations aimed at dismantling insurgent strongholds across the region.
The military also disclosed that another high-profile ISWAP figure, Mohammed Khalifa, a member of the group’s Shurah Council, was neutralized during recent joint operations.
Security officials described the latest developments as a major setback for ISWAP, which has remained active in parts of Borno and the Lake Chad Basin despite intensified counter-insurgency efforts.
The surrender is expected to provide valuable intelligence to security agencies as efforts continue to restore peace and stability in Nigeria’s North-East region.
