A factional leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), led by former Minister of Special Duties, Tanimu Turaki, on Friday held a closed-door meeting with former President Goodluck Jonathan amid growing speculation over the 2027 presidential election.
The meeting comes barely 48 hours after Jonathan confirmed he was consulting widely following calls from supporters urging him to return to the presidential race in 2027.
Speaking during a recent visit by a group of political supporters in Abuja, the former president described the presidency as a serious undertaking that requires broad consultations and careful consideration.
“You are asking me to come and contest the next election. The presidential race is not a computer game. But I’ve heard you, and I’ll consult widely,” Jonathan reportedly said.
The latest engagement with the Turaki-led PDP faction has further fueled discussions within political circles about Jonathan’s possible return to frontline politics ahead of the next general election.
However, Jonathan’s potential ambition is already facing legal opposition.
A suit currently before the Federal High Court in Abuja is seeking to prevent the former president from contesting the 2027 election. The case was instituted by lawyer Johnmary Jideobi, who argued that Jonathan is constitutionally barred from seeking another term as president.
The plaintiff is asking the court to restrain Jonathan from presenting himself to any political party as a presidential candidate in the 2027 polls.
On April 28, Justice Peter Lifu ordered that hearing notices be served on all parties involved in the matter as the legal battle over Jonathan’s eligibility gathers momentum.
The development adds another layer to the growing uncertainty within the PDP, which has continued to grapple with internal divisions and leadership disputes ahead of the next electoral cycle.
