February 5, 2026 – Ondo State, Nigeria – The family of Mr. Oluwasegun Olayinka Oluwarotimi has announced his passing on 4th February 2026, marking a devastating conclusion to a prolonged struggle against institutional oppression and injustice in Ondo State.
Starnews NG reports that Mr. Oluwarotimi was unlawfully shot by an officer of the Ondo State Security Network Agency (Amotekun Corps) on 9th August 2021, an incident that resulted in the amputation of his leg and permanent disability. This tragic event not only destroyed his livelihood as a commercial motorcyclist but also plunged him into significant hardship.
Despite repeated efforts to seek accountability from the Ondo State Government, including demands for compensation, the family faced ongoing silence and inaction. According to a statement issued by Mr. Oluwarotimi’s lawyer, Tope Temokun, a timeline of events reveals numerous attempts to secure justice:
- On 18th October 2022, a letter was sent to the Ondo State Amotekun Corps Commandant demanding compensation of two million Naira (N2,000,000.00) on behalf of Mr. Oluwarotimi.
- Following this, a letter was addressed to then-Governor Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu on 24th October 2022, bringing the matter to his attention.
After a judgment from the Ondo State High Court on 29th March 2023 awarded ₦30 million to Mr. Oluwarotimi, further requests for compliance were submitted to both the then-Governor and the Attorney-General. However, despite the court’s affirmation of the judgment, the Government failed to honour the payment, leaving Mr. Oluwarotimi in dire financial straits due to his medical condition.
In November 2024, after the Court of Appeal struck out the Government’s appeal, the family continued to seek compliance with the court’s ruling, but their efforts remained unanswered. Tragically, Mr. Oluwarotimi passed away before the legal resolution could be achieved.
In a poignant statement, Temokun lamented the systemic failures that allowed this injustice to persist, urging that the court should serve as the last hope for citizens when the government fails to uphold its legal obligations. “When the government is unwilling, it leaves no hope for the average citizen,” he stated.
The family, while mourning their loss, continues to highlight the need for accountability and reform in the face of such tragedies.
