Senate President Godswill Akpabio has alleged that individuals opposed to the progress of Nigeria are fuelling insecurity across the country in a bid to discredit the administration of President Bola Tinubu.
Akpabio made the claim on Friday while delivering a keynote address on democratic governance and peacebuilding in Africa during the unveiling of three books in honour of former Head of State, Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar, who recently marked his 84th birthday.
The Senate President said President Tinubu was contending with forces determined to undermine his government through acts capable of destabilising the country and eroding public confidence in the administration.
According to him, the President has been grappling with “enemies of progress” who are allegedly sponsoring insecurity to portray the government in a negative light.
Akpabio, however, did not provide specific evidence to support the allegation.
Speaking on governance and democracy, the Senate President commended Abdulsalami for his role in Nigeria’s democratic transition, noting that the former military leader resisted pressure from certain groups to extend his stay in power.
He described Abdulsalami’s decision to hand over power as a demonstration of statesmanship and commitment to democratic principles.
Akpabio also criticised what he termed the influence of sycophants who often encourage leaders to remain in office beyond their constitutional mandate.
Despite the country’s security and economic challenges, he expressed confidence that Nigeria would overcome terrorism, poverty and other developmental obstacles through sustained national efforts.
The event attracted political leaders, diplomats, academics and other dignitaries and formed part of activities commemorating Abdulsalami Abubakar’s 84th birthday anniversary.
