Tinubu Reportedly Halts Planned Retirement of 30 Senior Police Officers After Disu’s Appointment

According to source within the presidency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reportedly ordered a halt to the planned mass retirement of about 30 Deputy Inspectors-General (DIGs) and Assistant Inspectors-General (AIGs) in the Nigeria Police Force, following the appointment of Olatunji Tunji Disu as Acting Inspector-General of Police (IGP).

The development was confirmed on 27 February 2026 through sources within the Presidency and security circles.

Disu’s elevation came after the resignation of former IGP Kayode Egbetokun, and was formalised by President Tinubu at a decoration ceremony at the State House in Abuja, where he pinned the acting IGP rank on Disu.

Under long-standing convention, the appointment of a new IGP often triggers the compulsory retirement of more senior officers, potentially reshaping the leadership hierarchy. However, Presidency sources told journalists that Tinubu intervened to block the retirements, stressing that the experience of the senior DIGs and AIGs is needed to maintain continuity in leadership during Nigeria’s ongoing security challenges.

The directive was communicated via insider reports to news organisations rather than an immediate public press release, with officials indicating the decision aims to preserve institutional stability as Disu assumes command.
