President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has received an honorary fellowship from the West African College of Physicians (WACP) at the State House in Abuja, with the college citing his administration’s commitment to healthcare reforms and medical development.

The recognition was presented on Thursday, October 22, during a meeting with the college’s delegation. Following the ceremony, Tinubu urged medical professionals across West Africa to develop practical solutions to the migration of skilled healthcare workers, warning that the trend was placing additional pressure on health systems and limiting access to essential services.

He also called for stronger disease prevention and emergency preparedness, particularly in response to threats such as Ebola and other infectious diseases.

Tinubu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to making healthcare more accessible, affordable and efficient. He commended Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Muhammad Ali Pate, for his role in driving health sector reforms.

WACP President and Chairman of its Board of Trustees, Dr Mamadou Mourtala Ka, said the fellowship recognises leaders whose contributions have made an impact on healthcare delivery in the sub-region.

The college’s Secretary-General, Professor Musa Dankyau, disclosed that the fellowship had been awarded only eight times in its 50-year history. Previous recipients include former Gambian President Dawda Jawara and former Nigerian military Head of State Ibrahim Babangida, who received it in 1991.

The college is scheduled to hold its 50th anniversary celebration and Annual General Scientific Meeting in Abuja from October 26 to 28, 2026.
