President Bola Tinubu has expressed his condolences to world-renowned boxer Anthony Joshua following a road accident on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway that claimed two lives and left the boxer injured.
In a message addressed to Joshua on X (formerly Twitter) on Monday, the President described the incident as a tragic loss that has cast a shadow over the season, while praying for the repose of the deceased and a speedy recovery for the boxer.
“I extend my deep sympathies to you following the tragic accident on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, which claimed two precious lives and caused you injuries,” Tinubu said. “This immense tragedy casts a deep shadow on this season,” he added.
Tinubu noted that he shares in the grief of Joshua and his family as they come to terms with the emotional impact of the incident, highlighting the boxer’s character and service to the nation. “I sympathise with you and your family as you bear the emotional weight of this unfortunate incident. As a sportsman, you have always shown courage, discipline, and unwavering love for our country. These are qualities that have made you a source of national pride,” the President stated.
Calling for unity and mutual support, Tinubu emphasized, “In moments like this, we must encourage one another as brothers and sisters with a shared destiny.”
He concluded by offering prayers for Joshua’s recovery and the victims of the crash: “I pray for strength, wisdom, and grace for you during this painful period. May God grant you a speedy recovery and repose to the souls of the departed,” he said.
Starnews NG previously reported that Joshua was involved in a road accident on Monday at Makun, Ogun State, along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway. Eyewitnesses stated that the accident occurred shortly after 11 am when the Lexus SUV conveying the boxer reportedly collided with a stationary truck near the Danco Filling Station, before the Sagamu Interchange on the Ibadan-bound lane.
According to eyewitness accounts, Joshua sustained minor injuries, while two occupants of the vehicle died on the spot. “It was a two-vehicle convoy: a Lexus SUV and a Pajero SUV. Joshua was seated behind the driver, with another person beside him,” stated an eyewitness named Orojo. He added that officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps arrived at the scene shortly after the crash, and investigations into the circumstances surrounding the accident have commenced.
