The National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress, Felix Morka, has claimed that President Bola Tinubu has performed better in his first term than every democratically elected president Nigeria has had.
Morka made the assertion during an interview with Channels Television on Monday while defending the performance of the Tinubu administration.
He said Tinubu inherited an economy that was already in severe difficulty after years of what he described as poor governance under successive administrations.
“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has outperformed any president in his first term. He has outperformed any democratically elected president in this country in their terms,” Morka said.
Asked about the indicators supporting the claim, the APC spokesman said the evidence was reflected in the country’s economic indicators.
“The indicators are res ipsa loquitur as we say in law; they speak for themselves. This president inherited an economy that was completely in a mess,” he said.
Morka attributed the country’s economic difficulties to successive administrations, particularly criticising the Peoples Democratic Party’s 16-year rule.
He described former President Muhammadu Buhari as a “stopgap president” who, according to him, prevented the country from further deterioration before handing over to Tinubu.
“Buhari was a stopgap president that really came to keep the country from tipping over the precipice — from 16 years of horrific maladministration of the PDP government,” he said.
Morka added that Buhari “served his term, did his job to hold the country still for President Tinubu to enter.”
The APC spokesman further argued that Tinubu’s policies had transformed the economy to such an extent that some of the administration’s former critics were now acknowledging its achievements.
He said Nigeria had “come out of the woods” at the macroeconomic level as a result of policies introduced by the Tinubu administration.
However, Morka did not provide specific figures or comparative benchmarks showing how Tinubu had outperformed previous democratically elected presidents.
The APC-led Buhari administration governed Nigeria from 2015 to 2023, after which Tinubu succeeded Buhari as president in 2023 under the same political party.
