President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has revealed that he deliberately stopped reading newspapers and public commentary during the early stages of his administration’s economic reforms because he anticipated strong criticism and resistance from Nigerians.
Speaking at the Africa CEO Forum in Kigali reported on May 15, 2026, Rwanda, Tinubu explained that the difficult decisions taken by his administration, including the removal of fuel subsidy and major economic reforms, were necessary to prevent Nigeria from sliding into deeper financial crisis.
He admitted that the reforms came with painful consequences but insisted they were unavoidable for long-term national stability.
According to the President, he ignored negative commentaries in order to remain focused on governance and policy implementation.
Tinubu stated that leadership requires the courage to take difficult decisions regardless of public backlash, adding that his administration has now begun seeing positive signs of economic recovery and stability.
The President also defended his economic policies by stressing that development cannot be achieved without sacrifices, taxation, and structural reforms.
He maintained that Nigeria is gradually becoming more stable and predictable despite the criticism surrounding his administration’s policies.
