President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated Nigerian football administrator Samson Adamu on his appointment as Acting General Secretary of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), describing it as a landmark achievement for Nigeria and the West African region.
The commendation was conveyed in a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, who noted that the appointment marks a proud moment for the country’s growing influence in continental football administration.
CAF had earlier announced Adamu’s appointment on March 29, 2026, making him the first Nigerian to occupy the organisation’s top administrative office since its founding in 1957. He steps into the role in an acting capacity following the exit of Veron Mosengo-Omba.
Adamu, who previously served as CAF’s Director of Tournaments and Events, was praised by Tinubu for his professionalism and excellence, particularly in organizing major football competitions across Africa.
The President described the development as a significant milestone for Nigerian sports, aligning with his administration’s broader goals of youth empowerment, national unity, and global competitiveness through sports.
Expressing confidence in Adamu’s leadership, Tinubu stated that his experience and strategic insight would help strengthen CAF’s operations and further advance football development across its 54 member nations.
He concluded by wishing Adamu success in his new role and reaffirmed Nigeria’s full support as he takes on the historic responsibility.
