Three people have been confirmed dead while 12 others were rescued after a two-storey building collapsed in the Ajuwon area of Ifo Local Government Area of Ogun State.
The building, located on Baale Street and comprising shops and residential apartments, reportedly collapsed on Monday afternoon following heavy rainfall in the area.
Emergency responders were immediately deployed to the scene to begin search and rescue operations.
Speaking at the scene, the South-West Zonal Director of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Akiode Saheed, said occupants of the building had noticed structural cracks before the collapse but failed to notify the relevant authorities.
He disclosed that rescue teams recovered three bodies from the rubble, while 12 persons were pulled out alive.
Saheed said evacuation of the debris was ongoing, with emergency agencies continuing search and rescue efforts.
He urged residents to promptly report signs of structural defects in buildings to appropriate authorities to prevent similar tragedies.
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) also joined the operation, following a request for assistance from Ogun State, as Ajuwon is a border community between Lagos and Ogun states.
LASEMA Permanent Secretary, Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, said the agency deployed personnel and heavy rescue equipment to support the ongoing operation.
