At least three persons have been feared dead following a fatal road accident at Ette Junction in Ikot Abasi Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State on Wednesday.
The crash reportedly involved a Mack truck with registration number XS 761 LSD and a commercial tricycle.
Eyewitnesses said the accident occurred when the truck attempted to overtake a stationary vehicle belonging to Sterling Petrochemical and Fertiliser Limited but collided with the tricycle, killing its occupants on the spot.
As of press time, the Federal Road Safety Corps had yet to release an official report on the incident.
Reacting to the development, Sterling Petrochemical and Fertiliser Limited expressed grief over the tragedy and extended condolences to the families of the victims.
In a statement issued by its media head, Aniekeme Finbarr, the company confirmed that the crash occurred along its operational corridor and involved one of its trucks.
The firm explained that the collision happened during an overtaking manoeuvre near one of its parked vehicles, resulting in the loss of three lives.
Describing the incident as unfortunate, the company pledged support to those affected and reiterated its commitment to safety along its routes.
It noted that additional safety measures had been implemented to minimise such risks.
According to the company, security operatives, including the police and members of the Joint Task Force, were deployed to the scene to manage traffic and investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.
It added that in the past year, it had introduced several safety interventions, including awareness campaigns, distribution of reflectors to riders, stricter speed enforcement for drivers, and deployment of trained personnel at high-risk areas, particularly during periods of low visibility.
