The Presidency has acknowledged the possibility that terrorist groups may have infiltrated Nigeria’s security agencies, saying such infiltration cannot be ruled out.
President Bola Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Policy Communication, Daniel Bwala, made the remark while speaking on The Link Up Podcast, hosted by EchoRoom, when asked whether the Nigerian military had been infiltrated by terrorists.
Bwala said previous arrests of some military personnel and police officers over alleged links to terrorism suggest that isolated cases of infiltration may exist within the security services.
“You cannot rule out the facts that they may have one or two agents in the army, anywhere else,” he said.
“Our police have always been arrested, and soldiers arrested involved in this kind of thing.”
He, however, noted that such incidents are not unique to Nigeria, citing the case of former United States intelligence contractor Edward Snowden as an example of security breaches that can occur in any country.
“This will happen anywhere in the world. Snowden was a contractor to the US national security. These are elements that can happen, and why I didn’t want to talk much on that is because there are measures we’re taking and we don’t want people to know,” Bwala added.
