Taraba Mourns as Renewed Attacks by Terrorists Target Tiv Communities

Fresh violence has erupted in Taraba State, where terrorists have launched renewed attacks on Tiv communities in the Takum Local Government Area. Residents report ongoing killings and the recovery of multiple corpses, leading to widespread mourning.

One distressed resident informed SaharaReporters on Tuesday evening that the assaults were still ongoing at the time of the report. “Killings are happening now in the Tiv community in Takum LGA. It is a serious situation. Dozens of people have died, and about six corpses have been recovered as I speak to you,” the resident stated.

Another source accused the state government of indifference, describing the attacks as targeted and deliberate. “People are mounting at Takum Local Government. The governor doesn’t care. It’s targeted genocide. Only the media can help these people,” the source added.

Photographs obtained by SaharaReporters show victims of the attacks lying lifeless, highlighting the extent of the violence that has swept through the communities.

The latest assault coincides with a series of sustained attacks on Tiv Christian settlements in the Chanchanji district of Takum LGA, where residents have frequently accused the Taraba State Government and security agencies of failing to protect them from armed assailants.

As previously reported by SaharaReporters, over 100 people were killed within a month during coordinated attacks on Tiv communities, with survivors forced to flee as their homes, farmlands, and churches were either taken over or destroyed.

A community elder and official of the Northern Christians Religious Leaders Assembly (NOCRELA), Rev. Dr. Amb. Micah Philip Dopah, lamented the government’s inaction despite repeated appeals for assistance. “The issue has persisted for a long time. The government is not taking any action. People are being killed daily without any help. We have written several pleas to the government, but there has been no response,” Dopah stated.

Another elder conveyed to SaharaReporters that the violence, which began about two years ago, has escalated sharply in recent weeks, displacing entire communities and destroying livelihoods.

NOCRELA has characterized the attacks as coordinated and targeted, revealing that at least 102 people were killed within 33 days during multiple assaults on Tiv settlements in the Chanchanji district. The group has accused suspected Fulani militia of carrying out these attacks and criticized security agencies for failing to intervene despite numerous distress calls and warnings.
