The Presidency has announced that the proposed executive bill on the establishment of state police will be ready for President Bola Tinubu’s review by September 3, 2026.
Chairman of the Presidential Working Group on the National Policing Bill, Femi Gbajabiamila, disclosed this on Monday after the committee’s inaugural meeting at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
Gbajabiamila said the committee has adopted a seven-week work plan running from July 27 to September 14, 2026, to prepare the legal framework for the implementation of state policing across the country.
According to him, once President Tinubu approves the draft bill, it will undergo a nationwide consultation before being revised and forwarded to the National Assembly for legislative consideration.
He stressed that the timeline is ambitious but necessary, adding that the process is designed to ensure a thorough and credible legal framework.
On the financial implications of creating state police, Gbajabiamila said it was too early to estimate the cost, noting that any projection would be based on detailed research and the specific security needs of each state.
He also announced that Nigerians would have the opportunity to contribute to the drafting process by submitting memoranda through the committee’s dedicated website.
Gbajabiamila said the public consultation would remain open for about 10 days, with the possibility of an extension if necessary, stressing that public participation is critical to ensuring the success of the proposed state police system.
