At least three people have died and several others sustained injuries following a stampede at the Niger State Government House in Minna.
The incident occurred on Tuesday night after some youths were reportedly invited to the Government House amid plans for a protest over the recent deaths of 37 gold miners.
According to Daily Trust, the youths were invited in an effort to persuade them to abandon the planned protest.
Among those reportedly killed were a woman identified as Dije and her daughter, Hurairat, both internally displaced persons from Allawa in Shiroro Local Government Area.
The newspaper reported that the situation later attracted more people, including women, after reports circulated that Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago would give ₦10,000 to those who had gathered at the Government House.
The injured victims are currently receiving treatment at Minna General Hospital.
The governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Bologi Ibrahim, said the state government would issue an official statement on the incident, while the Niger State Police spokesperson, SP Wasiu Abiodun, said he would verify the report before commenting.
