Spain have been crowned champions of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after edging Argentina 1-0 in extra time in a dominant final at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on Sunday.
The European champions controlled much of the contest from start to finish but were repeatedly frustrated by Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez, whose series of outstanding saves kept the defending champions in the match throughout regulation time.
After a goalless 90 minutes, Spain finally found the breakthrough in the 106th minute of extra time. Nico Williams headed the ball into the path of Ferran Torres, who fired home from close range to send Spanish fans into celebration.
Torres’ strike proved to be the decisive moment in one of the most dominant World Cup final performances in recent history, as Spain consistently created the better chances while limiting Argentina’s attacking opportunities.
Argentina, reduced to 10 men late in the game, launched a desperate push for an equaliser in the closing stages but Spain’s defence held firm to secure a famous victory.
The triumph marks Spain’s second FIFA World Cup title, adding to the trophy they first won in South Africa in 2010. It also ends Argentina’s hopes of defending the title they claimed four years earlier.
Spain’s success caps an impressive tournament campaign, with their disciplined performances and attacking quality culminating in another historic achievement on football’s biggest stage.
