Afrobeat musician Seun Kuti has addressed the controversy surrounding activist Omoyele Sowore and businessman BLord, clarifying that Sowore’s actions were not motivated by personal allegiance.
Speaking during a viral Instagram live session, Kuti said Sowore’s intervention was aimed at challenging what he described as institutional bias within the Nigeria Police Force, rather than defending BLord as an individual.
He explained that the core issue was the conduct of law enforcement in disputes involving influential figures, alleging that the police appeared to take sides in the matter.
“Sowore wasn’t fighting for BLord. He was fighting the Nigerian police to stop taking sides when two celebrities were fighting and using power to favour one person over the other,” Kuti said.
According to him, the incident reflects a wider concern about fairness, accountability, and abuse of power within public institutions, noting that such behaviour could affect any citizen regardless of status.
The controversy followed BLord’s arrest and detention after a petition filed by social media critic VeryDarkMan, with allegations including criminal conspiracy, impersonation, and misuse of identity.
A Federal High Court ruling in Abuja reportedly led to BLord’s remand at the Kuje Correctional Centre pending further proceedings.
Sowore later criticised the development, describing it as an abuse of power, and played a role in facilitating BLord’s release.
Kuti urged against misinterpreting the situation, stressing that the broader struggle remains one for justice, institutional accountability, and equal treatment under the law.
