Thai authorities have arrested six Nigerian nationals over their alleged involvement in a sophisticated romance scam network operating from a luxury condominium in Nonthaburi Province near Bangkok.
The suspects were apprehended during a police operation code-named “Dark Room Crackdown,” following investigations into suspicious financial transactions linked to foreign cybercrime syndicates.
According to Thai police reports, the suspects allegedly used fake online identities, AI-generated images, and deceptive romantic relationships to manipulate victims into transferring money.
During the raid, officers reportedly recovered mobile phones, laptops, bank documents, and digital materials believed to contain scam scripts and fraudulent online profiles.
Authorities further disclosed that five of the six Nigerians had overstayed their visas for extended periods despite reportedly holding student visas without evidence of school attendance or legitimate employment.
The arrests highlight growing international concerns over transnational cyber fraud networks increasingly linked to artificial intelligence and online identity manipulation.
Analysts warn that such criminal activities continue to damage Nigeria’s global reputation while also exposing weaknesses in international immigration monitoring and digital crime enforcement systems.
