Former Kaduna Central Senator, Shehu Sani, has warned Nigerians against attempting to drag US President Donald Trump into Nigeria’s electoral affairs.
Sani made the remark in a post on his official X account on Tuesday, August 11, 2026, while commenting on attempts to involve Trump in African elections.
According to him, Trump is unlikely to prioritise the credibility of elections in Africa, unlike former US presidents Barack Obama and Joe Biden.
“Those who are trying to drag Mr Trump into our elections are just wasting their time,” Sani wrote.
He argued that Trump’s attention was currently focused on major international issues, including the Strait of Hormuz, Gaza and Ukraine.
“Trump is not Obama or Biden. He has least interest in the credibility or otherwise of elections in Africa,” he said.
Sani further cited elections in Tanzania, Uganda and Cameroon as “case studies”, apparently pointing to what he described as the current approach of the Trump administration towards electoral developments on the continent.
He added that Trump’s political party in the United States was also facing its own electoral challenges ahead of the forthcoming congressional elections.
“Most importantly, his party is battling to survive the upcoming Senate and House of Representatives elections,” Sani wrote.
His comments come amid heightened political activities and controversies surrounding elections across Africa, with Nigeria also preparing for its own major electoral contest in 2027.
The former senator’s statement has sparked discussions over the extent to which the United States and President Trump could influence or respond to electoral developments in Nigeria.
