Former Senator Shehu Sani has come to the defense of First Lady Oluremi Tinubu regarding her endorsement of U.S. airstrikes against terrorist groups in Sokoto State, asserting that her position is warranted.
Sani questioned the criticism directed at the First Lady and referred to the airstrikes conducted in December 2025 as a “positive development.” In a post on X on Tuesday, he urged for increased military action against terrorists, bandits, and kidnappers in northern Nigeria.
“The airstrikes in December against bandits and terrorists in the North were a positive step. Our Air Force needs to carry out more strikes against those mass murderers, rapists, and kidnappers,” Sani stated.
He continued, “What Senator Remi said is correct. I don’t understand why some individuals are attacking her given the horrific acts committed by those terrorists.”
The airstrikes, which took place on December 25, 2025, targeted Islamic State (IS) militants near the Niger border in Sokoto State. U.S. President Donald Trump referred to the operation as a “Christmas gift,” claiming it eliminated IS targets responsible for assaults on Christians.
During a recent trip to Washington, D.C., First Lady Tinubu hailed the strikes as a “blessing” and expressed her hopes for enhanced U.S.-Nigeria collaboration on security matters, including intelligence sharing and counter-terrorism efforts.
Her comments came as U.S. lawmakers scrutinized religious violence in Nigeria, which had been designated as a country of particular concern by the Trump administration.
