The Nigerian Senate has approved President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s request for a $516 million external loan, clearing the way for fresh financing to support major national infrastructure development, particularly road construction projects across key economic corridors.

April 29, 2026 — Lawmakers granted approval for the loan intended to fund sections of the Sokoto–Badagry Superhighway, a flagship transport project designed to improve connectivity between Nigeria’s northern and southwestern regions.

The approval followed the consideration of a Senate committee report on external borrowing and debt management.

The facility, reportedly structured through a syndicated arrangement with international financial institutions, is expected to support the construction of strategic road segments aimed at reducing travel time, improving trade routes, and strengthening national integration.

This development comes amid ongoing national debate over Nigeria’s rising debt profile, with critics expressing concern about long-term repayment pressures and fiscal sustainability. Supporters of the borrowing, however, argue that infrastructure investment is essential for economic growth, job creation, and improved logistics efficiency across the country.

Analysts note that the approval reflects the government’s continued reliance on external financing to bridge infrastructure gaps, even as questions persist about revenue generation and debt servicing capacity in Africa’s largest economy.
