Residents of farming communities in Apa Local Government Area of Benue State have been thrown into mourning following a deadly attack by suspected armed herdsmen that left several farmers dead, six others missing, and a young girl abducted.

The attack occurred in the Akpete/Asaba community in Ojantele Ward, where a group of local farmers had gone to harvest cashew seeds from their farm before they were reportedly ambushed by the attackers.

Reacting to the incident, Benue State Governor, Hyacinth Alia, strongly condemned the assault, describing it as a terrorist act against innocent civilians pursuing their livelihood.

According to a statement issued by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Tersoo Kula, the governor expressed deep sorrow over the tragic loss of lives and the suffering inflicted on the affected communities.

“How can people attack farmers who are simply pursuing their legitimate means of livelihood? My people are hardworking farmers and do not deserve such cruelty,” the governor said.

Governor Alia described the killings as an assault on humanity and peaceful rural life, insisting that such violence would not be tolerated in the state.

The governor also extended his condolences to the families of the victims and residents of Apa Local Government Area, assuring them that the state government stands with them during the difficult period.

He further revealed that security agencies have been directed to intensify operations in the area to track down the perpetrators, rescue the abducted girl, and locate the missing victims.

The Benue governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to protecting lives and property across the state and pledged that communities affected by insecurity would not be abandoned.

“We are working closely with security agencies and community leaders to strengthen security around vulnerable communities,” he said.

Benue State, located in Nigeria’s Middle Belt region, has experienced recurring clashes between farming communities and armed groups in recent years, with attacks often targeting rural settlements and agricultural workers.

Governor Hyacinth Alia urged residents not to lose hope, assuring them that efforts are ongoing to restore safety so that farmers can return to their fields without fear.
