The House of Representatives on Tuesday withdrew its proposed constitutional amendment bill seeking to establish state police, opting instead to proceed with an Executive-sponsored version of the legislation.
The decision marked a significant shift in the National Assembly’s approach to state policing, with lawmakers prioritising the proposal transmitted by the Presidency.
During plenary, the Executive bill successfully scaled its first and second readings before being referred to the House Committee on Constitutional Review for detailed legislative consideration.
The withdrawal effectively places the House’s earlier proposal on hold, allowing the Executive-backed amendment to become the primary legislative vehicle for the establishment of state police across the country.
The Constitutional Review Committee is expected to scrutinise the bill’s provisions and recommend amendments before it returns to the floor for further legislative action.
The move is seen as a major step in ongoing efforts to reform Nigeria’s policing structure amid persistent calls for decentralised security to tackle growing insecurity nationwide.
