Reps Pass Executive Bill to Establish State Police

The House of Representatives has passed the Executive Bill seeking to establish state police, marking a major milestone in ongoing efforts to decentralise Nigeria’s policing structure.

The legislation was approved during Thursday’s plenary after lawmakers withdrew an earlier constitutional amendment bill on state police and opted to consider and pass the Executive Bill instead.

The decision aligns with the Senate’s earlier approval of its version of the legislation, bringing the proposed state policing framework a step closer to becoming law.

If eventually enacted, the bill will introduce a dual policing system that allows both the Federal Government and state governments to operate separate police services.
