The Peoples Redemption Party has alleged that President Bola Tinubu’s decision to travel out of Nigeria was connected to concerns over the possible release of documents concerning him by the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation.
The National Chairman of the PRP, Dr Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, made the allegation on Monday while speaking at the first Summit of Opposition Political Parties held at the Shehu Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja.
Baba-Ahmed also questioned the simultaneous absence of Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima from the country, describing the development as unprecedented in Nigeria’s political history.
He asked who was responsible for the affairs of the country while both the President and his deputy were outside Nigeria.
“Who is in charge now?” Baba-Ahmed asked.
The PRP chairman alleged that Tinubu’s foreign trip was an emergency journey undertaken amid the controversy surrounding the possible release of records relating to the President by the FBI.
He said, “It is the first time in the history of this country that both a sitting President and his Vice President would be away from the country at the same time.”
Baba-Ahmed further alleged that Tinubu’s trip was intended to forestall the possible release of the FBI documents.
He, however, did not present evidence at the summit to substantiate the allegation linking the President’s trip to the FBI records.
The comments came amid growing political tension ahead of the 2027 general elections, with opposition parties stepping up criticism of the Tinubu administration and exploring possible areas of cooperation.
The summit in Abuja is expected to provide a platform for opposition parties to deliberate on the political direction of the country and strategies ahead of the 2027 elections.
The PRP’s intervention has consequently shifted attention from the President’s vacation itself to the broader questions of leadership, presidential absence and the political controversy surrounding alleged FBI records.
