Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo has been provisionally suspended by the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) as its disciplinary authorities investigate his departure from the national team’s training camp in September.

The federation’s Disciplinary Council confirmed the decision in a statement reported by Portuguese public broadcaster RTP on Saturday, October 10, 2026.

According to the statement, the council decided on October 9 to initiate disciplinary proceedings against the forward over the possible implications of events reported to it two days earlier.

The federation said a provisional suspension had been imposed on the player, while the case was referred to its Disciplinary Investigation Commission on October 10 and classified as urgent.

It added that details of the proceedings would remain confidential until the investigation was completed.

Ronaldo apologises over camp exit

Ronaldo reportedly left Portugal’s training camp in Copenhagen on September 30 following a disagreement with head coach Jorge Jesus over his role in the team.

In a report published on October 6, beIN SPORTS said the 41-year-old had apologised for his departure and accepted responsibility for his actions.

“I should not have done it. The responsibility is exclusively mine,” Ronaldo said in a statement quoted by the broadcaster.

The Portugal captain also reportedly apologised to his teammates and indicated that he would accept any punishment imposed by the federation.

Ronaldo has not announced his retirement from international football and has expressed his willingness to return to the national team after serving any disciplinary sanction.
