The Nigeria Police Force has recovered 34 illegal firearms in Osun State ahead of Saturday’s governorship election, as security agencies intensify efforts to prevent violence and electoral malpractice.
The Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Aniete Iniedu, disclosed this on Thursday, August 13, 2026, during a stakeholders’ town hall meeting at the Osun State Police Command headquarters in Osogbo.
According to Iniedu, investigations are ongoing to determine the sources of the recovered weapons, after which those found responsible will be prosecuted in accordance with directives from the Inspector-General of Police.
He stressed that firearms and other weapons would not be permitted at polling units during the election.
He added that security personnel deployed to polling stations would operate under strict rules, while undercover officers and other security agencies would assist in monitoring activities.
The police have deployed about 15,000 personnel across the state, alongside helicopter and drone units for aerial surveillance before, during and after the election.
