The Ondo State Police Command has commenced an investigation into a fire incident that claimed the lives of two children in Ode-Aye, Okitipupa Local Government Area of Ondo State.
The incident occurred on March 18, 2026, at No. 1 Olaribigbe Street, Zion Area, Ode-Aye.
Police authorities identified the victims as Queen Ohwo, 6, and Everlyne Ohwo, 4, both daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Ohwo Peter.
Operatives who visited the scene carried out documentation and evacuated the severely burnt remains of the victims to a health centre in Ode-Aye. The parents were said to be in a state of shock and trauma.
Preliminary findings suggest the fire may have resulted from negligence during cooking activities.
The Commissioner of Police, Adebowale Lawal, has ordered a thorough investigation to determine the exact cause of the incident.
The Divisional Police Officer in the area has been directed to secure the scene, obtain statements from witnesses and collaborate with the Federal Fire Service to ascertain the origin of the fire.
The command commiserated with the bereaved family and urged residents to exercise caution when handling fire and cooking appliances.
It also advised the public to avoid leaving cooking unattended, keep flammable materials away from open flames, ensure children are not left alone around heat sources, and maintain basic fire safety tools.
The police reiterated their commitment to protecting lives and property, assuring residents of continued efforts to ensure safety across the state.
