The Bauchi State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of a suspect in connection with a case of alleged culpable homicide in Gamawa Local Government Area of the state.
According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, Nafiu Habib, the incident occurred on April 16, 2026, following a dispute between two young men in a rural grazing area.
The police said the altercation involved 23-year-old Ahmadu Babayo and 20-year-old Adamu Makki, both residents of neighbouring communities. The disagreement reportedly escalated while the individuals were tending to animals in the bush, during which the suspect allegedly struck the victim on the head with a stick.
Authorities disclosed that upon receiving the report, the Divisional Police Officer mobilised a team of operatives alongside local security groups to the scene. The victim was immediately taken to the General Hospital Gamawa for treatment but was later confirmed dead by a medical doctor.
The suspect has since been taken into custody, while the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further investigation and possible prosecution.
Reacting to the development, the Commissioner of Police, Sani-Omolori Aliyu, described the incident as unfortunate and avoidable. He extended condolences to the family of the deceased and assured that due process would be followed to ensure justice.
The police also used the opportunity to urge members of the public, particularly youths and herders, to exercise restraint and seek peaceful means of resolving disputes. The Command reiterated its commitment to maintaining law and order, warning that acts of violence will be met with appropriate legal consequences.
