The Federal High Court in Abuja has directed the Attorney-General of the Federation, the Inspector-General of Police, and the Nigeria Police Force to provide the detainee, Adeniyi Adeyemi, with unimpeded access to his chosen legal counsel. Adeyemi is currently linked to the alleged fake Presidential Foreign Intervention Promotion Council (PFIPC).
Justice Obiora Egwuatu issued the order on Thursday following an ex parte application filed by Adeyemi’s lawyer, M.B. Abdulazeez. The court ruled that as long as Adeyemi remains in custody, he must be permitted to meet with his lawyers at all reasonable hours.
While Adeyemi’s legal team had also requested bail, release from detention, access to personal medical practitioners, and a restraint on police interrogation without counsel present, Justice Egwuatu declined to grant these additional reliefs at this stage. The judge held that the respondents must first be given the opportunity to be heard.
Consequently, the court has ordered the Attorney-General and the police to appear within 72 hours to show cause why the remaining reliefs should not be granted. The case has been adjourned until September 9 for further proceedings. Adeyemi had previously been declared wanted in connection with the alleged PFIPC scandal.
