Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has reportedly emerged as the sole presidential aspirant of the National Democratic Coalition (NDC) ahead of preparations for Nigeria’s 2027 presidential election.
Monday, May 18, 2026. Reports indicate that the development followed consultations within the coalition and agreements among party stakeholders who allegedly endorsed Obi as the preferred consensus candidate to lead the platform into the next general election.
According to political observers, Obi’s emergence is expected to reshape opposition politics in Nigeria as coalition talks among several political groups continue gaining momentum ahead of the 2027 polls.
Supporters of the former Anambra State governor have described the move as a strategic step toward building a stronger opposition front capable of challenging the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The development has already generated mixed reactions across the political space, with analysts arguing that Obi’s popularity among young Nigerians and urban voters could significantly influence future political alignments and campaign strategies.
Others, however, believe the success of the coalition would depend largely on unity among opposition leaders and the ability to build strong nationwide structures.
