Peter Obi: No One Can Predetermine INEC Chairman Amupitan’s Actions Ahead of 2027

Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate Peter Obi has said no one can determine in advance whether the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Amupitan, will conduct the 2027 general elections fairly or otherwise, insisting that the electoral umpire should be allowed to discharge its constitutional responsibilities independently.

Speaking during an interview, Obi likened the INEC chairman to a football referee, saying he had never met Amupitan personally and therefore could not prejudge his conduct. He stressed that Nigerians, particularly the youth, should focus on participating actively in the democratic process rather than making assumptions about the electoral body.

Obi maintained that the outcome of the 2027 elections would ultimately depend on the resolve of Nigerians to protect their votes and insist on credible elections.

According to him, if citizens collectively reject electoral malpractice and remain committed to democratic values, the country can experience positive political change.

He also reiterated his belief that Nigeria possesses the resources and potential to become a prosperous nation under responsible leadership.

The former Anambra State governor’s remarks come amid growing political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections and increasing public scrutiny of INEC’s preparedness to conduct free, fair and credible polls.

His comments have further fueled discussions on electoral integrity, institutional independence and the role of citizens in safeguarding Nigeria’s democracy.
