Peter Obi has thrown his weight behind calls for mass protests over what he and his allies describe as a calculated plot to stop the African Democratic Congress (ADC) from fully participating in the 2027 general elections. This development was reported today, April 8, 2026, and it has sharply escalated the growing political tension surrounding the future of opposition politics in Nigeria.
At the centre of the controversy is the claim that recent institutional and legal actions (especially the crisis over ADC leadership recognition) are not accidental, but part of a broader strategy to weaken the party before the next presidential race.
Obi’s camp argues that if ADC is crippled administratively or denied a lawful structure, it could effectively shut out one of the strongest emerging opposition platforms in the country.
This is no longer just about Obi or ADC; it is about whether Nigeria is quietly drifting toward a civilian one-party state disguised as democracy.
If opposition parties can be destabilised before voters even get to the ballot, then elections risk becoming mere ceremonies rather than genuine contests of ideas and leadership.
This is the danger Nigeria must confront now; not in 2027, but before 2027 is hijacked.
