A wave of anger and concern has swept across Nigeria following the circulation of a disturbing viral video showing a young man identified as Abba, a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, being beaten and tortured by suspected kidnappers.
Abba, described by family members as a young Hausa graduate serving his mandatory national service, was reportedly abducted while traveling along a highway in northern Nigeria earlier this week. According to preliminary accounts from local sources, armed men intercepted the vehicle he was in and forcefully took him away to an undisclosed location.
Shortly after the abduction, a video began circulating on social media platforms. In the footage, Abba appears visibly distressed and injured while his captors threaten him and demand ransom from his family. The kidnappers, who spoke in Hausa and Fulfulde during the recording, claimed responsibility for the attack and warned that failure to meet their demands would result in severe consequences.
The video has sparked widespread condemnation online, with Nigerians expressing heartbreak over the young corps member’s ordeal. Many social media users have called on security agencies to intensify efforts to rescue victims of kidnapping and dismantle criminal networks operating across the region.
Family sources say Abba had recently graduated and was posted to serve in a northern state as part of Nigeria’s compulsory one-year NYSC program. Relatives described him as hardworking and optimistic about his future before the tragic incident.
Security officials have not yet released an official statement detailing the operation to secure his release. However, local authorities confirmed that efforts are underway to track down the perpetrators. Community leaders have also appealed for calm, urging citizens not to inflame ethnic tensions while security agencies conduct their investigations.
Kidnapping for ransom has become a persistent security challenge in several parts of Nigeria, particularly along highways and in rural communities where armed groups exploit limited security presence. Victims often include students, travelers, farmers, and public servants.
Human rights advocates have renewed calls for stronger intelligence gathering, improved rural policing, and coordinated federal and state security responses to address the crisis. They also warned against sharing graphic or distressing content online, noting that such footage can retraumatize victims and their families.
