Minister of Works, David Umahi, has criticised Peter Obi’s presidential ambition, arguing that the former Anambra State governor should not automatically be regarded as the South-East’s preferred candidate for the 2027 election.
Umahi made the remarks during an interview with ARISE News on Friday, insisting that the region has other qualified political leaders capable of seeking the presidency.
The former Ebonyi State governor faulted Obi for allegedly failing to consult influential political leaders in the South-East before pursuing his presidential ambition in 2023.
“You cannot play politics in South-East without consulting people like us,” Umahi said, adding that he would have consulted regional stakeholders if he were contesting for the presidency.
His comments also reflect an ongoing disagreement over whether Obi’s reported willingness to serve a single four-year term, rather than seek a second term, would benefit the South-East’s long-term presidential aspirations. Umahi has previously argued that the region should have the opportunity to serve eight years when its turn comes.
Umahi also defended South-East politicians supporting President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid, arguing that political alliances across Nigeria are necessary for the region to achieve its presidential ambition.
