Women from different groups in Osun State on Monday took to the streets of Osogbo to protest alleged political violence, intimidation and killings ahead of Saturday’s governorship election.
The protesters, who marched through parts of the state capital, carried placards with various inscriptions while chanting solidarity songs.
The demonstration came amid growing concerns over the security situation and the conduct of the August 15 governorship poll.
The women called for an atmosphere that would allow residents to exercise their civic rights without fear or intimidation.
They also condemned alleged acts of political violence and called on security agencies to ensure the protection of voters before, during and after the election.
The protest highlights the rising tension in the state as political parties intensify their campaigns and mobilisation ahead of the crucial governorship election.
The women urged the authorities to ensure that the election is peaceful, credible and free from violence, stressing that residents should be allowed to vote for candidates of their choice without coercion.
The protest comes as security agencies and other stakeholders continue to assure residents of adequate security during the election.
