Afrobeats singer, David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has appealed to United States President Donald Trump to pay attention to the August 15 Osun State governorship election amid concerns over possible violence and intimidation.
Davido made the appeal in a post on X on Tuesday, urging the US and the international community to monitor the election closely and encourage Nigerian authorities to protect voters and ensure that their votes count.
The singer said the growing tension surrounding the election had raised concerns about possible violence, intimidation and disruption of the democratic process.
“President Donald Trump, I am calling your attention to the situation in Osun State, Nigeria, as we approach the election.
“There are growing concerns about tension and the possibility of violence, intimidation, or disruption of the democratic process,” Davido wrote.
He urged the authorities to ensure that residents of the state could exercise their constitutional right to vote without fear.
“Osun people deserve to exercise their constitutional right to vote freely, peacefully, and without fear,” he said.
Davido also called on the international community to pay close attention to the election and put pressure on relevant authorities to protect voters.
“I appeal to the United States and the international community to pay close attention to the election and encourage all relevant authorities to ensure that every voter is protected and every vote is respected,” he said.
The singer stressed that his main concern was to prevent bloodshed and ensure a credible electoral process.
“We do not want bloodshed. We do not want intimidation. We want peace, transparency, and a free and fair election,” he added.
The latest appeal came after Davido previously threatened to seek Trump’s intervention if anything went wrong during the Osun election.
During a live session with comedian Carter Efe, the singer said he would involve the US president if the electoral process was compromised.
Davido, who is a nephew of Governor Ademola Adeleke, has openly supported the governor’s re-election bid and has been vocal about the need for a peaceful election.
He had earlier called on political actors and residents of the state to reject violence, intimidation and provocation, insisting that the choice of voters must be respected.
The election is expected to feature Governor Adeleke and other major contenders, including the All Progressives Congress candidate, Bola Oyebamiji, and the African Democratic Congress candidate, Najeem Salaam.
Davido’s latest intervention comes as political activities intensify across the state, with stakeholders and observers increasingly calling for a peaceful and credible election on August 15.
