Former Edo State Governor and Nigerian senator, Adams Oshiomhole, has alleged that some South African politicians deliberately promote anti-Nigerian sentiments for political gain, amid renewed tension over xenophobic rhetoric and attacks targeting foreign nationals.
Oshiomhole made the remarks on May 13, 2026, during an interview aired by Naija News TV, where he accused certain South African political figures of using Nigerians as scapegoats to divert attention from domestic economic and governance problems.
The senator argued that many Nigerians living in South Africa are business owners, professionals, and contributors to the economy rather than threats to local communities.
He also criticised repeated xenophobic narratives portraying Nigerians as responsible for unemployment and crime in the country.
His comments come amid growing diplomatic tension following recent anti-foreigner protests and calls by some Nigerian lawmakers for stronger retaliatory measures against South African businesses operating in Nigeria.
The latest remarks have further intensified debate around xenophobia, African unity, and the fragile relationship between Nigeria and South Africa, two of the continent’s largest economies.
