Senator Adams Oshiomhole, representing Edo North Senatorial District, has accused the Minister of Works, David Umahi, of neglecting critical federal roads in Edo and Delta States, alleging an imbalance in the distribution of road infrastructure projects across the country. He made the remarks during Senate plenary, while raising concerns over the deteriorating condition of major highways in the two states.
Oshiomhole argued that despite the Federal Government’s approval of several new road projects nationwide, existing federal roads linking Benin City to Warri, Asaba, Auchi and Okene remain in deplorable condition, making travel difficult for motorists and businesses. He questioned why critical road corridors in Edo and Delta had continued to suffer neglect despite repeated appeals to the Ministry of Works.
The former Edo State governor further alleged that road projects affecting the two states had been repeatedly excluded from federal budget allocations over the past three years.
According to him, the only significant intervention came through President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s directive permitting the use of tax credits to rehabilitate part of the affected road network.
He therefore urged the Senate to prevail on the Minister of Works to adopt a more balanced and national approach to road development, insisting that every region deserves equitable access to quality infrastructure.
The comments have renewed discussions over infrastructure funding and project distribution, with stakeholders calling for accelerated rehabilitation of strategic federal highways to improve transportation, commerce and economic activities across Edo, Delta and the wider South-South region.
