Education is more than earning certificates or securing employment; it is a lifelong investment in personal growth, confidence and opportunity. While many people debate the value of formal education, real-life experiences continue to demonstrate that learning remains one of the greatest tools for self-improvement.
Mr. Alex Akperi, now a married father of four and one of my tenants, shared a remarkable experience that transformed his perception of education. In 2010, he visited Oceanic Bank (now Ecobank) to carry out a banking transaction. After arriving early and filling out a deposit teller, he became embarrassed by his poor handwriting.
The simple task of completing a banking form exposed his educational shortcomings and left him feeling inadequate. Rather than allowing the experience to discourage him, he made a life-changing decision to return to school and improve himself.
That single moment became the turning point in his life. He discovered that education is not merely about academic qualifications but about developing communication skills, critical thinking and the confidence to participate effectively in society. Today, he regards that experience as one of the best things that ever happened to him.
Mr. Akperi’s story reminds us that school is not a scam.
If anything has failed many young Nigerians, it is the country’s social and economic system—not education itself. Knowledge remains a powerful tool that opens doors, restores confidence and transforms lives.
