In a desperate plea for intervention, community leaders from Iju and Itaogbolu have addressed an open letter to Ondo State Governor, Dr. Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, highlighting the dire state of Iju Itaogbolu General Hospital. The letter, obtained today by Starnews, describes the hospital as being in a “deplorable state” and calls for immediate action to prevent chaos and confusion in the communities reliant on its services.
The letter was penned on behalf of traditional ruler Oba Amos Farukanmi, the Okiti of Iju, by Chief Isaac O. Adedurin, the Oniseeri of Iseri Iju, along with Ogundeji, the youth leader, and Pst. Solomon Ogunbuyide, the peace committee chairman. They voiced their concerns over the hospital’s deteriorating condition, stating that the ongoing Akure-Ado-Ekiti road dualisation project has caused significant damage, rendering the hospital unsafe for staff and patients alike.
Specific issues highlighted in the letter include:
- Damaged fence and collapsed gate.
- Leaking administrative block and wards due to blasting.
- Destroyed operating theatre.
- The absence of a functioning ambulance and staff transport.
- Many laboratory equipment are either unavailable or worn out.
- No boreholes or water for sanitation purposes.
The community leaders urged Governor Aiyedatiwa to engage the Ministry of Health and the Health Management Board to ensure that Samchase Construction Company is held accountable for the necessary repairs to the damaged facilities. They also called for the government to provide modern facilities without further delay.
The appeal comes as a response to the ongoing health crisis in Ondo State, which is reported to be one of the worst in the southwest of Nigeria. Starnews NG has repeatedly covered the dire conditions of the state’s health sector, yet it appears the government remains unresponsive to the outcry.
“With this letter, we trust that your Excellency will give urgent attention to forestall a looming protest by the youths and entire communities involved,” the letter concludes.
As the health situation continues to deteriorate, the residents of Ondo State remain hopeful that their voices will be heard and that essential improvements will be made to the healthcare system, which directly impacts their lives and wellbeing.
