Ondo Former Speaker Raises Fresh Alarm as Mysterious Odour Returns to Akure

AKURE, ONDO STATE — The mystery surrounding the foul-smelling odour that previously gripped parts of Akure has deepened, as the former Speaker of the Ondo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Jumoke Akindele, has raised a fresh alarm regarding its sudden and intense return in the early hours of Sunday.

Rt. Hon. Akindele took to social media shortly after midnight to report that the stench had resurfaced, describing it as significantly worse than previous incidents. In her post, she likened the return of the odour to a persistent and aggressive phenomenon, noting that the intensity was such that it felt as though “all the soakaway pits of Akure” had been opened simultaneously.

The former Speaker has actively sought to gather information from the public, urging residents to identify the specific areas where they are currently perceiving the smell. She intends to collect this data and present it to the ministry, with the hope that it will assist the authorities in identifying the source of what she has characterised as a “possibly hazardous smell.”

This development follows the state government’s previous intervention, which saw the inauguration of a committee comprising five professors to investigate the matter through geomapping. During that initial period of concern, the government had issued a public health advisory, recommending that residents wear nose masks and limit their exposure.

As of now, Starnews NG reports that there has been no official response from the state government regarding this latest resurgence. However, the alarm raised by Rt. Hon. Akindele has prompted renewed public concern and calls for the authorities to provide an urgent update on their findings and a definitive resolution to the ongoing situation.

On her facebook page, Hon. Akindele wrote:

“The odor is back!

“It’s midnight!

“Like a demon who after being cast out roamed about and came back to its swept, thoroughly cleaned but empty former abode and went to bring more demons worse than himself to take up residence again, this night’s odor is like the odor from tens of thousand thousands soak away! You would think all the soak away pits of Akure are open tonight!

“If you can perceive it right now, please indicate your part of Akure or Ondo State in general where you are perciving it at.

“We will collect the data and send to the ministry so that they may know where to look for answers to this malodorous possibly hazardous smell”, she added.
